Transmissions

Some vehicles will require specific gearing to work better, or at all. This is where gearboxes come in. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all accomplish the same goal. They use Gear Ratios to manipulate an engine's Torque and RPM in order to make a vehicle go faster or accelerate more quickly. Gearboxes only have a single gear ratio, while transmissions have multiple that can be switched between.

Gearboxes

The Simple Single Gearbox uses a single gear. Its main purpose is to adjust the torque and RPMs of an engine before it goes to wheels or a propeller. However, it can also be used to change the direction the driveshaft spins in.

Inputs
  • Drive-shaft - Used to transfer engine power to other parts.
Properties
  • Gear Ratio - A number the RPM is multiplied by. Can be set between 0 and 100, including decimals. Values less than 1 increase Torque but decrease RPM, while numbers greater than 1 increase RPM while decreasing Torque. It can also use negative numbers to reverse the direction of rotation.
  • Use Chain Instead of Gear - Ticked by default, this option keeps the output driveshaft spinning in the same direction as the input. When unticked, will cause the output to become negative.
Outputs
  • Drive-shaft - Used to transfer engine power to other parts.
  • Current RPM - Tells other parts the RPM of the driveshaft output.

Transmissions

Simple car transmission.png Car Transmission

The Simple Car Transmission has 14 separate gear settings. One typically reserved for reverse, and 13 typically used for different forward gear ratios. Individual gears and the overall gear coefficient are all adjustable. Connect any engine using driveshafts to its input and any driveshaft based part like a Wheel Hub or Propeller Hub to its output. You can also connect the output to multiple parts.

Inputs
  • Drive-shaft - Used to transfer engine power to other parts.
  • Gear Up - When this input receives a value of 0.5 or greater, it moves the Transmission's current gear setting up to the next gear setting. So it would change 2nd gear into 3rd gear.
  • Gear Down - When this input receives a value of 0.5 or greater, it moves the Transmission's current gear setting down to the next gear setting. So it would change 2nd gear into 1st gear.
  • Set Gear - Automatically switches to the gear number input here. So inputting a 3 switches to third gear.
Properties
  • Reverse Gear - Generally reserved for a negative gear ratio, can also be any number you choose.
  • Gears 1 through 13 - Each setting Can contain its own Gear Ratio that you set individually.
  • Overall Gear Coefficient - A Gear Ratio that is applied to an input driveshaft before it goes to any of the other gears.
Outputs
  • Drive-shaft - Used to transfer engine power to other parts.
  • Current Gear - Outputs the number corresponding to the currently selected gear.
  • Current Gear Ratio - Outputs the gear ratio of the currently selected gear.
  • Current RPM - Tells other parts the RPM of the driveshaft output.

The Small Car Transmission is a small 7-gear transmission, similar to the Simple Car Transmission. However, it was designed with smaller cars in mind. As a result, it is smaller and weighs less. However, it also has far fewer gears. Only 7, as opposed to 13.

  • Gears 1 through 6 - Each setting Can contain its own Gear Ratio that you set individually.
